Brazil’s Bolsonaro-Led Far Right Wins a Victory Far More Sweeping and Dangerous Than Anyone Predicted. Its Lessons Are Global.
“Many, instead, are motivated by legitimate grievances toward an establishment ruling class that has failed them on all levels, that expresses indifference if not outright contempt for their suffering and loss of hope, that they blame, often with good reason, for enacting policies that have destroyed their futures while refusing to accept any responsibility for it. And once that framework is adopted, any perceived enemy of that ruling class becomes their friend, or at least someone whose vows of destruction become more appealing than vows to preserve the system they justifiably despise (the reality is that Bolsonaro (like Trump), with his Chicago-trained neoliberal economic guru, will serve the economic interests of the establishment with great devotion at the expense of his working-class voters, but the perception of his anti-establishment animus is what matters).”
The standard establishment reaction in the face of rising demagogues is to denounce and malign those who support them. That only serves further to exacerbate the dynamic.

Bryce hopes his progressive platform — including supporting a $15 minimum wage, Medicare for All and the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement — can propel him to victory.

When Krasner is sworn in next year, he won’t only be one of the most progressive politicians in Philly. He’ll also be one of the most progressive DAs in the country. Maybe even the most progressive, in fact. Earlier this week, the Atlantic wrote that “Krasner wouldn’t be the first ‘reform-minded’ prosecutor to take office, a term used to describe the growing cohort of district and state’s attorneys vowing to overhaul cash bail, abolish the death penalty, and crack down on police corruption. But he would be the most progressive in this pool, a distinction that takes on extra weight at a time when the Justice Department is moving right.”
He beat Republican Beth Grossman by more than 40 percentage points.

“Carter, an IT specialist and veteran, defeated incumbent Republican delegate and House Majority Whip Jackson Miller by around 10 percentage points, in an election many thought was an easy race for the GOP candidate.”
Lee Carter, a member of Democratic Socialists of America, had been written off by establishment Democrats, but just beat a top-ranking Virginia Republican.
The only way the GOP wins is through cheating.
This is Crosscheck in action. The photo is of an actual ‘Crosscheck card’ sent to a Georgia voter after the election in the Sixth Congressional District. It warns the voter that she will be moved to ‘inactive states’ if she does not return it within 30 days, even though she voted.
If you get a ‘Crosscheck card’ in the mail from your board of elections asking you to confirm your address, they don’t tell you you’ve been accused of voting twice, but you’ve been accused. And if you don’t return that card, you’re going to lose your vote. So RETURN THE CARD, but make a photocopy or take a photo of it and send it to email@example.com because I’m collecting these so we can expose it!
