I am so sick of this already tired narrative that discussing a politician’s public record is divisive. This is how politics is supposed to be conducted by the civically engaged. Thorough debate on policy, records, and vision is a prerequisite for a healthy republic.
If your candidate of choice being scrutinized for policy positions or votes that they have cast is making you feel squeamish, maybe you should look into supporting another candidate. There are probably going to be 20 Democratic candidates, you don’t NEED to support the one who defends prison slave labor or takes money from big oil. You don’t need to sell yourself short already.
This is a big reason why modern “liberalism” and the mainstream Democratic Party establishment is nearly bankrupt to the public at large. You can’t claim to care for communities of color and marginalized groups and vehemently support a politician that built their career off of locking those people up. You can’t “ #believe in science” yet back oil industry shills who vote to expand offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. You can’t post #Resist every other hour and then support candidates who voted for Trump’s judges, tax cuts, or ridiculous increase in the already bloated military budget.
Having values and integrity isn’t a litmus test. If you think it is, you should examine your own values and ask why you keep betraying them
