Text SHUTDOWN to 21333 now to help hold Trump and congressional Republicans accountable in the fight ahead.
Trump and his representatives had been labeling the event the “Schumer shutdown” after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, but the New York Democrat was quick to call it “the Trump shutdown.”
“It’s almost as if you were rooting for a shutdown,” Schumer said from the Senate floor. “And now we will have one. And the blame should crash entirely on President Trump’s shoulders. This will be called the Trump shutdown. This will be called the Trump shutdown because there is no one, no one, who deserves the blame for the position we find ourselves in than President Trump.”
The federal government shut down at midnight Friday as senators continued to scramble to reach a deal to fund the government.
“Tonight, on the eve of the first anniversary of his inauguration, President Trump earned an ‘F’ for failure in leadership,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-California, said in a statement just after midnight.
It’s the first shutdown since 2013 when a Democrat, Barack Obama, was the president and Republicans controlled Congress.
The Senate failed to pass a key vote on a short-term government funding bill as a midnight deadline to keep the federal government open came and went.
“I do it for the animals,” Lancia said. “If we don’t do it for the species, we’re going to take a lot of other species down with us. There is no reverence for life. We’ve forgotten about it completely for the almighty dollar and I’m getting sick of it. I’m getting sick and tired of it.”
