Listen to the way he asks these questions and the expression on his face. Almost as if he’s thinking “gotcha”. Wrong. Sad.
A guy at my work is eligible for his pension, but he can’t retire because he wouldn’t be able to afford health insurance on top of other expenses. His pension won’t cover it all. He needs to work another 10 years until he’s 65 so he can get Medicare.
I say “if we had universal healthcare, you’d be able to retire today!” He looks confused and says “yeah but then I’d have to pay for everyone else’s healthcare too”…. This is the mentality and stupidity of your average American. He’d rather work another decade than “pay for someone else’s healthcare” even though he probably wouldn’t pay anymore in taxes than he does today.
If he left today it would also open up a good paying job for someone younger who needs a career. Single payer makes sense on so many levels.
