The fact that Nancy Pelosi is the “best choice” for speaker of the House is telling with what’s wrong with the Democratic Party, and American politics in general.
I know, you’re getting ready to attack me as a Russian troll or Trumper, as most always try to. The fact is that I am in an elected leader within the Democratic Party of my town, so spare me the nonsense. This is an issue I see every single election cycle. The Democratic bench of good candidates is almost non existent.
Sure, every so often we actually elect someone who is good. Usually when a decent person is elected, it’s because they crashed their way into power, see Alexandria Ocasio Cortez. And that’s how I came to a leadership role, in a much more modest way, by organizing and overthrowing my town committee.
The Democratic bench is comprised of kiss asses and party hacks. Only after you prove your undying loyalty to the party power structure, are you allowed to run for office. The same is true in the state legislatures and congress. You don’t get to Congress unless you show the power brokers you are serious, serious about doing what you’re told and what is right for them.
This leads us to where we are today, or where we were in 2016. We don’t have viable people in congress to take leadership roles. We don’t have decent people in state houses to take leadership roles. We have party hacks who will put career advancement ahead of their constituents, their country, and even their own friends and family. This is why we’re stuck with Nancy. And this is why we’re routinely stuck with voting for the “lesser of two evils”.
I am trying to make change in my town and in the party, and it’s an absolute slog. Every other week I feel like quitting, just giving up and focusing on my life. But we have problems that no one in power wants to solve. Hell, forget solving them, we have problems that people don’t even want to acknowledge. If people like us give up, who will fight for what’s right? Please people, get involved in some way. We desperately need you
