While everyone gushes over “the most diverse Congress in our history”
– 78 year old Nancy Pelosi was elected Speaker of the House…again
– She has written a rules package that includes the “Pay Go” rule – meaning that all proposed spending needs to be accompanied by tax increases or spending cuts – assuring no big programs are enacted over the next two years since the Senate will never approve tax increases
– She killed the Green New Deal committee and resurrected the Committee on Climate Crisis – a toothless committee that doesn’t have the power to subpoena or write legislation – assuring there is no major action on climate destruction happens
– She has repeatedly stated that she will not move to impeach Trump until the Mueller investigation is over, despite the fact that the Mueller investigation is a criminal matter and impeachment is a political one. Running a business from the Oval Office, as Trump is, is not illegal but it is unconstitutional and it is impeachable.
Diversity is a good thing. People of different backgrounds bring different perspective and life experience. This should be celebrated.
Having different gendered, ethnic, or religious people who perpetuate the same failed policy and leadership is not a good thing. This is the same old failed neoliberal identity politics that will doom us to another term of trump.
“We should not be in the position of thinking about legislation in the context of personal investment. As long as you own stocks, it’s hard to rule out of your mind.” — Sen. Jeff Merkley
“As public officials there are a lot of impositions on our lives. This is not one of them. Having a diversified portfolio is an easy thing.”
Some good suggestions from the man who spent more time in Congress than anyone else.
I am personally torn on abolishing the Senate. I think going to a proportional representation model, instead of the winner take all system which we currently have, would make more sense. Make the Senate proportional to the vote on a national level and make the House proportional to the vote on in individual states.
Proportional Representation: an electoral system in which parties gain seats in proportion to the number of votes cast for them
Abolish the Senate and publicly fund elections.
Sham democracy, sham republic, sham country
Critics of the North Carolina’s congressional maps, ruled unconstitutional by a court, said they provided a “protective sea wall” for Republican members during a pro-Democrat national environment.
“We’ve got some of the smartest people in America who serve in the Congress, and we’ve got some of the dumbest”, Mr Boehner said. “We have some of the nicest people you’d ever want to meet, and some that are Nazis”.
The former Speaker of the House unloads on his ex-colleagues
I’ve heard some ridiculous arguments regarding teacher strikes and wage increases, asserting that because teachers get time off in the summer, it’s justifiable to pay them less. To that I say, what about Congress? In 2018 Congress is expected to be in office less than half of the work year! Talk about freeloaders. Never let a politician try to tell you about the virtues of hard work. Worst yet, Republicans demonize the working poor and scoff at the idea of minimum wage increases, all while they plan their next paid vacation on the government dole.
It’s a lot more than your average American worker.
