Unhappy with the way the young socialist government was changing the country, the U.S., through the CIA, supported plotters in the Chilean military, specifically General Augusto Pinochet.
The threat that Chile posed to the United States and the local right wing elites was that Allende and his government were finally responding to the needs of the majority of the people, interfering with their capitalist and political interests. Namely, Allende nationalized natural recourses, built homes for the poor and improved healthcare and education services.
To shut down the possibility of another socialist country, together with Cuba, rolling out their policies successfully, the United States and national right-wing elites moved in first by destabilizing the economy, and then with an outright military overthrow of the government.
On the day, Allende found himself in the governmental palace where he gave his last speech to the Chilean people through a radio broadcast. In the broadcast, he told the people that whatever happened he would not surrender nor resign. Hours later after a long standoff, Allende was dead and the U.S. backed military plotters had effectively taken control of the country.
