People wonder why we have so many issues with violence in America, yet they fail to recognize that American culture is inherently violent by design.
People blame guns, “toxic masculinity”, racism, and any other phrase of the day for our issues, but the fact is America is and always has been violent.
We have been in state of perpetual warfare for decades. We have industrialized violence and it has permeated our culture and body politic. The country that slaughters innocent people around the globe can’t claim to have a non violent culture. Hollywood and the media apparatus glorify war, justify murder, and propagate violence on a daily basis. Popular culture desensitizes violence to the youth and constantly pushes the envelope on blood and gore.
A country founded on the mass genocide of native populations, a country that imported human beings to be sold and used as property, a society that erected systems to allow for the brutal exploitation of workers can not claim to be nonviolent. A country founded on murder and exploitation will be violent to its core.
Guns are most definitely a problem in this country, but our culture that glorifies violence and weaponry is the true problem. Until we as a country value human life more than weaponry, we will continue to deal with mass murder.
To that end, we’ll be putting $30 million behind our youth organizing program in ten states, and redoubling our efforts with the Need to Impeach campaign — already over 4 million strong.
There will be more announcements on how you can get involved in the coming weeks and months. Stay updated at tomsteyer.com.
