Henry George (September 2, 1839 – October 29, 1897) was an American political economist, journalist, and philosopher. His immensely popular writing is credited with sparking several reform movements of the Progressive Era, and inspiring the broad economic philosophy known as Georgism, based on the b…
The reasons for this may well be political. Mason Gaffney, an American land economist and scholar of Henry George, has argued that Bates Clark and his followers received substantial financial support from corporate and landed interests who were determined to prevent George’s theories gaining credibility out of concerns that their wealth would be wittled away via a land tax. In contrast, theories of land rent and taxation never found an academic home. In addition, George, primarily a campaigner and journalist, never managed to forge an allegiance with American socialists who were more focused on taxing the profits of the captains of industry and the financial sector.
For classical economists, it was a factor of production, and the source of “rent.”
Progressives should really stop calling Republicans “Conservatives”, as that gives their ideology a respectfull sounding name, traditionally since the time of Edmund Burke and Adam Smith a Conservative is someone who believes Societies must change, but they must change is a slow, gradual and calibrated way this would describe the view of John Adams, the second President of the United States of America, In more recent times; William Howard Taft and Dwight Eisenhower could be considered “Conservative”.
Dwight Eisenhower for instance was supportive of the achivements of the New Deal and even wanted to expand certain elements of it like expanding Social Security which in 1956 was not Universal, he also initiated the Inter-State High Way system that was the biggest road building program since the Roman Empire, he got his Inspiration from the German Autobahns that were initiated by German Socialists just before Hitler came to Power.
The Republican Party today are not a traditional “Conservative” Party, but an extreme right-wing regressive Party wanting to roll back 100 years of Progress, that is why so many of them if not all of them are enthusiastic about a Convention of the States to re-write the US Constitution to anchor their Agenda into the Constitution for all eternity.
Much if not All of the Corporate Influence in US Politics stems from Private/Corporate donations to political campaigns that began under Richard Nixon when he appointed Lewis Powell and other Reactionary judges to the Supreme Court that read the Fourteenth Amendment as Equal Protections for all “Persons” that included Corporations, as Politicans began to rely on Corporate donations to run political campaigns this then tilited the American political spectrum very far to the Reactionary Right.
